South West (SW) Regional Strategic Policy and Research Officer  

Salary Range: £54,813 – £57,253 (Fixed term until March 2024)

Location: : Based at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), Police HQ ,Waterwells, Gloucestershire but responsible for the SW Region area including Wiltshire, Devon & Cornwall, Dorset, and Avon & Somerset. Regular traveling will be required across the south west and include flexible working opportunities.

Vacancy Description

The five Police and Crime Commissioners in the South West of England are seeking to appoint a South West regional strategic policy and research officer. This post will be hosted and managed by Gloucestershire OPCC. You will be part of the Gloucestershire OPCC team and working with all other OPCCs in the South West region.

This exciting and challenging role will support and provide advice to the five PCCs in the South West to assist with the alignment of policing services. Current areas of interest include a focus on Organised Crime Groups, Drugs and Road Safety more areas will follow as the PCCs identify further issues. 

This will include conducting research to identify areas for collaboration, reviewing and recommending regional policy positions, identifying and sharing best practice and developing and delivering plans to maximise bring policing and crime services closer together.. 

The post holder will be in a politically restricted post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

The Key Requirements of the Role

The person appointed will already hold a degree or equivalent related qualification in a relevant subject. The successful candidate will have experience of working in a policy environment, and a proven track record of working with and influencing senior level decision makers.

Eligible candidates will have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information concisely and clearly. You will be experienced in developing and delivering a strategic approach to policy that benefits local communities, and also politically astute with an understanding of public affairs and policing governance.

Furthermore, you must be prepared to work flexibly and outside normal hours to provide advice and support to the PCC as required and travel around the region and the country to fulfil the duties of the post.

The successful candidate will be subject to personal and financial vetting checks prior to appointment.

This role benefits from flexible working arrangements and work pattern is negotiable.
