The Legal Services Department for Gloucestershire Constabulary is offering an exciting opportunity to become part of a valued team, providing legal services to the Chief Constable of Gloucestershire and officers, staff and volunteers working on his behalf. The team provides legal advice on a broad range of legal issues to the whole organisation.

We are looking for an individual who can offer an outstanding service in providing legal advice and representation on all aspects of police law. As part of a team of lawyers, the successful candidate’s principal responsibility will be to attend court in applications which aim to protect the public and vulnerable individuals.

Otherwise assisting within the Legal Services Department will mean working across a broad range of legal areas, which includes civil litigation (including malfeasance and personal injury), employment law, public law challenges, regulatory law, inquests and inquires, discrimination, information law, commercial and procurement law, family law and operational policing matters – helping to shape the policies and practices that form the operational policing approach.

This is a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. The successful candidate will need to be resilient, adaptable in their approach to case management, have the ability to take ownership and initiative, as well as demonstrate a willingness to learn. Being highly organised, working with minimum supervision and the ability to meet tight deadlines are crucial for this role. Equally important is a proactive approach that demonstrates a high level of performance and service delivery.

Candidates should have demonstrable experience in at least one or more of the following areas: Criminal Law, Civil Litigation, Human Rights Law, Police Operational Law, Judicial Review, Employment Law or Police Misconduct.

Previous advocacy experience is required.

Candidate applications must include details of your SRA number and the date you were admitted to the Law Society or Bar membership number and Year of Call or membership number and date granted Fellowship of CILEx, as appropriate.

Please note this is a temporary position, for a period of 20 months.
